In Palm Springs, the
provocative present is looking an awful lot like the past.
A new
generation of Hollywood swingers returning to the Ratpack playground of Frank,
Dean, Sammy, and even Shirley.
Only this time around it's a little less
hedonism, a little more hideaway. Is it time for a Palm Springs vacation home?
Just a two-hour
drive from Los Angeles, and anchored by the stunning San Jacinto mountains, Palm
Springs has always had geography on its side.
And a few years ago, a new
appreciation for the Jetson-meets-Neutra style of its midcentury architectural
gems – flying saucer roofs and heat-repellent steel and glass - accelerated the
comeback of the Palm Springs vacation rental.
Rent a Palm Springs Vacation Home
Vacation homes in
Palm Springs have almost all been renovated, and many of the iconic homes are
available for short term rental from
Time and Place Homes,
a company offering three-day minimum stays along with concierge service.
Two of
the most hotly requested are
Twin
Palms, the Frank Sinatra estate with a piano-shaped pool, and the
Elrod/Lautner House (right), made famous in "Diamonds Are Forever," according to
Stephen Zapantis, Time & Place Homes' director of concierge services for Palm
Springs.
Prices for the “iconic experience” don’t come cheaply; the Elrod/Lautner
House is $3,600 per night but as the house sleeps a minimum of ten, group
getaways can make the purchase worthwhile.
More
moderately-priced estates can be rented for a third of the cost of the icon
variety, including the
Andreas Hills
Golf Home, a remarkable three-bedroom, four-bath mid-century estate situated
at the new Indian Canyon Golf Club & Course.
Featured as a “Dream Vacation
Home” on NBC’s TV magazine show “Extra” and “Ultimate Destination on NBC’s
“Mansions and Millionaires” Andreas Hills rental costs start at $930 per night.
For the
budget-conscious traveler, the perfect Palm Springs Vacation Home might be The
Palms
The Palms, located in the desirable area Vistas Las Palmas.
Recently
featured in The New York Times, the four-bedroom, three-bath “Swiss Model”
Alexander home is decorated in vintage yellow and white, and sports a sparkling
pool and spa, and spectacular mountain views.
Rates start at $525 during season
and $425 in the summer months.
Regardless of what home you choose to rent in Palm Springs, be sure to do your
research on the location and the property’s condition.
Many of the “cheap
rentals” are listed at those rates for reason, and reside in less than desirable
areas.
Reputable properties and the websites that promote (them) should provide
numerous pictures of the home, as well as references and/or testimonials from
guests. So pack that mini dress and be sure to bring the sun block – a poolside
getaway in Palm Springs awaits.
