The Palm Springs International Film Festival is held in downtown Palm Springs, CA, every January.

The festival is one on the largest in the country, showcasing over two-hundred of films from more than 60 countries.

The Palm Springs Film Festival

When the house lights dim and the opening credits roll, a plush velvet seat can be the best place on earth. Nowhere is that more true than the Annual Palm Springs Film Festival.

In an era when DVDs and TIVO conspire to make the big screen smaller than it used to be, the klieg lights and panache of film festivals restore it to its proper size.

Here are movies from the badlands of Russia, the back-lots of Fresno, the quixotic grounds of Spanish countryside's; these are the movies that render the landscapes of forgotten worlds, stories that both affirm and redeem the art.

A lofty description for what started as a small marketing effort by then Mayor Sonny Bono. It was 1989 when Bono collaborated with local theaters to increase tourism by starting a “mini-fest” of sorts. 12 films were shown to approximately 300 people.

My, how things have changed. Over 105,000 attended the 2006 Festival, establishing it as one of the most popular events in the nation, perhaps second only to Sundance. 232 films from dozens of nations were shown across the Desert, including several world premieres and even more U.S. debuts.

It also remains the only Festival at which the public can view most foreign-language feature Oscar candidates in a single setting: Its Awards Buzz section screened the majority of films submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration in this year's category.
