A more affordable
version of The Parker, Ballantines Hotel Palm Springs marries luxury
amenities with vintage 50s kitsch.
Owned by Lake
Tahoe hoteliers Barb and Marty Cohen, Ballantines features an outstanding
collection of vintage mid-century furnishings, glass doored poolside lounge,
complimentary poolside breakfast, excellent concierge service, day spa by
appointment, private sunbathing patios, mini-fridges, free WIFI access, outdoor
bar, and poolside massage.
But it’s the 14
differently-themed rooms that stand-out in an explosion of color and style that
harkens back to the golden age of Hollywood and of Palm Springs' early days:
The Hawaiian Surf
Room captures the very essence of surfing culture which swept the States in
the 50's led by Elvis Presley movies. The kitchenette even boasts a restored
"King" brand fridge /stove/sink. Poolside and Queen bed.
The Jasper Johns poolside room celebrates this famous American Artist
with an American Flag painting and delightful chairs by the very collectible
Eero Saarinen.
The Courtney Suite is primarily yellow and white, with Formica featured
throughout. This is the only room with a fireplace, king bed, and a 4-person
50's dinette in its classic kitchen.
The Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. poolside room sports photographs of – who else
- Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. who reputedly enjoyed the occasional matinee in this
hotel. The bed is a stunning cherry wood vintage queen with an original chenille
bedspread.
Movie Men are celebrated poolside-style in this classic celebration of
male movie stars and furniture of the 50's, including an Eames surfboard table.
This room has a king bed, 50's retro bedspread and a private patio.
Movie Women are given equal status with black and white iconic
photographs of the great leading ladies of the bygone era. This poolside room is
complete with a small dressing area, 50's retro bedspread, king bed, and a
private patio.
Pretty in Pink isn’t just the title of a Molly Ringwald movie, it’s the
spirit behind this courtyard suite, with a copy of the famous Warhol
screen-print of none other than Marilyn Monroe. Featuring a 1,000 piece Marilyn
Monroe jigsaw puzzle for the very obsessed and/or patient, the suite sports a
vintage kitchenette with rose colored melamine plates, private patio, king bed,
and genuine 1950's radio. And yes, the rumors are true: Marilyn Monroe stayed in
this room which served as her hideaway from prying eyes!
The French 50's room has a panoramic view of the mountains, king bed,
private patio, and features featuring a concrete floor accented by a classic red
and orange shag pile carpet, Bertoia chairs and artwork by Francophille fave
Fernand Leger.
50's Musicals come alive with vintage images of Fred Astaire and Ginger
Rogers, the Rat Pack, and George Gershwin. This particularly fanciful suite
features an authentic Kelvinator fridge, Crosley radio, lave lamp, king bed, and
private patio.
The Rebel Studio features that quintessential rebel of 50s cinema James
Dean with classic photographs of the actor, queen bed, kitchenette and private
patio
The Palm Springs Suite is a celebration of yellow and green, with
lemonade-colored vinyl headboard, lime Formica counters, and yellow Cadillac
vintage chairs. The room also features a kitchenette and private patio.
The Out of Africa Room is more Swingin’ Safari than Karen Blixen's Kenyan
retreat, but it’s complete and utter fun: Leopard print bed linens are paired
with famous photographs from African movies, like the African Queen, Tarzan, and
more.
The most elegant at the Ballantines Hotel, the Audrey Hepburn Room is
highlighted by images of the celebrated icon, including Breakfast at Tiffany’s,
Sabrina, and Funny Face. Decorated in a delicate peach, the room features bobble
chenille bedspreads and can be accommodated to fit two twins or a king bed.
Rates at the Ballantines Hotel range anywhere from $100 to $180, but during
season, reservations must be made well in advance. Located on Indian Canyon Road
in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, the location is ideal, and great
restaurants and shops are only a block away.
This is definitely an adults-only
hotel as young children aren’t encouraged to stay, and sorry Fido – pets aren’t
allowed.
But if you’re in the mood for that vintage Palm Springs experience
without the Parker price, Ballantines Hotel Palm Springs is clearly the perfect
place for you.
